All large companies have lots of protection to their systems, as well as anti virus and spyware protection they also have firewalls.
A firewall controls the flow of network traffic by analysing data packets against a rule set and deciding if they should be allowed through or not. It is the barrier between a secure internal network and any other network (including the internet). Many PC's are also protected by firewalls.
Read the article below (click the image) and explain all of the reasons that this virus was so virulent, at the time I was working for Ford Motor Company and they closed down the entire network - the technicians were giving updates via handwritten notes stuck up in the lifts/canteens!
